When my Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, my sister and I worked together to give him the best care and maintain his mobility so he could continue his lifestyle at home. He had weekly wellness sessions to maintain his flexibility, strength and balance.
Well into advanced age, he was able to travel the world, play with his grandchildren and enjoy his motorized canoe! He was able to walk in his beloved neighborhood, and never spent one day in a nursing facility! Even after his diagnosis, he loved his life and said, “I know I would not be doing what I love this long, without the personal care of my doting daughters!”
My mom lived in her mid-eighties and was experiencing memory loss. She had received physical therapy for her neck, back and lower extremities on multiple occasions. However, due to her memory issues, she was not able to continue on her own and began to decline. Eventually she had difficulty getting up from a chair, was unable to put on her socks and was unsteady walking as well as experiencing fatigue.
She began doing twice weekly sessions with me with personalized stretching, strengthening, and balance training. She was then able to walk one hour a day, put on her socks and climbed stairs easily! She was even able to return to walking on uneven surfaces like the beach without fear of falling. She enjoyed her life at home, and was delighted to benefit from having a “doting daughter” to improve her life!
